What is The Bowen Technique?

“The body heals itself; the physician is only nature’s assistant.” – Hippocrates

The Bowen Technique is a remedial and holistic therapy that treats each individual's needs with a unique programme, from newborn babies and children to adults, the elderly, pregnant women, people with mental disabilities, people with physical disabilities and athletes.

The patient lies or sits comfortably, fully clothed, while the entire head and body are treated. Sequences of gentle rolling-type moves over soft tissue e.g. muscle, tendon, ligament and fascia, stimulate the body's natural healing mechanism through the connective tissue network. It is not a form of massage and there is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue.  The subtle nature of the Bowen Technique is in total contrast to its deep acting potential.

A unique and important part of the therapy are the periods of rest interspersed between the moves so that the treatment is generally a very pleasant experience, with many clients falling asleep.  The periods of rest give the body the necessary time to maximise the benefits and allow the body's natural intelligence to adjust and rebalance itself, relieve muscle strain, reduce pain and discomfort, increase energy circulation and restore lymphatic flows that may be blocked by tension, injury or disease.

The healing process naturally continues between the treatment sessions. It is recommended to have the next treatment 5-7 days later.  The Technique is performed over light clothing such as a T-shirt, saree,  blouse, shalwar kameez, tracksuit, or any thin material.

Theoretically there are no contraindications: it is safe for all.

The Bowen Technique can be used to help balance the body during pregnancy and also after childbirth. It may help to calm and settle baby, so bringing baby with Mummy at 6 weeks may be beneficial for both Mummy and Baby.

The Bowen Technique has been used to very beneficial effect with a wide variety of muscular-skeletal problems as well as chronic and organic conditions. See Testimonials Page. Please phone for further details or enquiries.

Practically any problem can potentially be addressed. The Bowen Technique aims to balance the whole person, not just the symptoms, thereby providing long term benefits.

You can see your practitioner regularly 2-4 times a year to maintain your health and it can also be used as a means of stress management. Bowen can be effective in helping to relieve everyday stress and anxiety that can make us feel under-par or prevent us functioning at our optimum by revitalizing the whole person.

A growing number of athletes and their physiotherapists are discovering that regular Bowen Technique treatments enhance performance and reduce the incidence of injury. When they do have an injury, the Bowen Technique brings rapid relief and gets them back to the game quickly.

The Technique was developed by Tom Bowen (1916-1982) of Geelong, Victoria, Australia, who was an intuitive healer with a clear insight and understanding of what an individual needed.  He dedicated his time to treating and helping all people and it is testament to his skill that his Technique continues to thrive today across the world.
